Per tutti gli anni '60 fu definito come la risposta inglese a Bob Dylan, per lo stile musicale ed i testi delle proprie canzoni, ma musicalmente egli dimostrò di avere un qualcosa in più del menestrello, grazie all' album Sunshine Superman, dove Donovan esplorò la nascente psichedelia con un grande maestria.
Purtroppo nel corso degli anni non seppe ripetere il successo dell'album, ma non è mai cascato in banalità rimanendo fedele al proprio stile.
